When I started Sparkling Mosaic, I wanted to create the kind of experience I'd want on my own travels. Not another thing to look at, but something to do. Something where you leave with dirty hands and a story.
What We Actually Do Here
We run hands-on soap making workshops in a cosy space in Amsterdam-Oost. You show up, Farah walks you through everything, and two hours later you walk out with gorgeous handmade soaps (or whipped soap, or body butter — depends on the workshop) that you made yourself.
No experience needed. Seriously. Most people who come to our workshops have never made anything more complicated than instant noodles. And they leave with something that looks like it came from a fancy boutique.
Why This Hits Different as a Tourist Activity
Here's what I've noticed after running dozens of workshops: tourists love this because it's the opposite of rushing around checking off landmarks.
You're sitting down. You're learning something. You're chatting with other people (or not, if you're more the quiet type — we're not going to force you into group exercises). And when you're done, you have a thing you made. Not a magnet from a gift shop. Something you actually crafted.
Last week, a couple from Texas came in during a rainy afternoon. They'd already done the canal cruise and the Van Gogh Museum. The wife said it was the highlight of their trip. The husband said he was "just along for the ride" but ended up being the most competitive soap colourist I've ever seen.
The Details
The workshop runs for about 2 hours in Czaar Peterstraat, Amsterdam. We provide all the materials you need, along with tea and snacks. You bring yourself and maybe a tote bag to carry your creations home.
